Here he is at the brand\u2019s centenary celebrations in 2019, where we chatted in front of the <em>Citroscopie<\/em> magazine stand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">We pay tribute to this great French designer, who passed away in early October at Rivoli Hospital, a few kilometres from where the Bertone design centre in Caprie was built. For now, I\u2019m working with my colleagues, some of whom were with me at Bertone. I don\u2019t want to let them down. We\u2019re a group, a team, a synergy\u2026 There are so many great blokes around me! He readily admits that <em>\u201cno, I wasn\u2019t necessarily a very good pupil\u201d<\/em>, but that <em>\u201cyes, the art teacher I had at school was a former SNCF engineer and he guided me towards industrial design rather than artistic drawing. I\u2019ll always be grateful to him because it was thanks to him that, when I started my career, I already knew how to draw a form plan\u2026\u2019<\/em> Being a designer in the 1960s did indeed require a well-rounded skill set, but it wasn\u2019t exactly a highly recommended career path. Towards the end of his career, he spent a great deal of time working on a book about all the Italian coachbuilders. An unfulfilled dream\u2026<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">And so Marc Deschamps walked through the doors of the Peugeot design centre in La Garenne-Colombes, in the immediate suburbs of Paris<em>. \u201cTo be honest, I didn\u2019t join Peugeot; I went there after being turned down by everyone else. I\u2019d even received a letter at the time from Philippe Charbonneaux, who told me \u2013 in a letter bearing a signature as long as your arm \u2013 that it would be better for me to consider a different career.\u201d<\/em> It was the Peugeot-Pininfarina partnership that captivated the young French designer above all else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BOUVOT-1024x687.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BOUVOT-1024x687.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BOUVOT-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BOUVOT-768x515.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/BOUVOT.png 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">With due respect for Pininfarina\u2019s legacy, Marc Deschamps joined Peugeot\u2019s design department, where he worked alongside Paul Bouvot, on the left.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cI remember writing directly to Montb\u00e9liard; I didn\u2019t even know the design centre was in La Garenne! I was lucky enough to go to Peugeot to work for six months with Paul Bouvot. \u201d<\/em> It was on that occasion that he met, amongst others, Yves Dubernard, another renowned French designer, equally modest. <em>\u201cYves Dubernard then went to work for Heuliez and I moved on shortly after leaving Peugeot. I tried my luck at the Simca design studio, where I worked for two years. There again, my skills in form drafting proved decisive<\/em>.<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">At Simca, Deschamps joined the cream of the crop of designers who would go on to make their mark in the years to come. <em>\u201cAbove all, we were paid twice as much as at any other French car manufacturer! \u201d<\/em> But this first really good contract quickly fell through when the French design studio moved to England\u2026 <em>\u201cWe all found ourselves out on the street; it was bad for everyone. But when I was at Simca, I lived in Rueil, not far from Renault and, crucially, opposite the journalist Jean Bernardet, who specialised in motoring for the daily newspaper L\u2019Equipe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_31-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_31-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_31-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_31-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_31.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cWe lived in the same block of flats, on the same landing. When he found out that we\u2019d all left Simca, he came to see me. We talked for a whole afternoon and parted with the promise that he\u2019d try to open doors for me in Italy. But over there, it was a time of repeated strikes, and that made it very difficult to get a job as a designer\u2026\u201d<\/em> Marc Deschamps had already made an initial approach to Bertone. <em>\u201cI\u2019d driven down to Turin in my Simca 1200 S to meet these leading figures. Bertone had turned me down at the time, but as I was in Turin, I paid a visit to the Ghia coachworks. I stayed there for exactly two months and three weeks! The day I left, he ran after me, saying: \u2018Look what Pininfarina\u2019s doing \u2013 I want us to do the same!\u2019 But thanks to Ghia, I quickly gained the credibility that allowed me to get back in touch with Nuccio Bertone and, this time, to meet the team. It was still the era of Gandini and Pagliano. They were there, along with Bertone and Beppe Panico, whom journalists knew well from his time in charge of communications. Bertone trusted me because I\u2019d come from Ghia, and I was hired on the spot! I was even the first designer to join the brand-new design centre in Caprie, on the outskirts of Turin, whilst Gandini was still working in the office based at the heart of the Grugliasco factory.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_27-1024x652.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_27-1024x652.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_27-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_27-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_27.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nuccio Bertone in front of the design centre of his <em>carrozzeria<\/em> in Caprie. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">This initial collaboration with the grand master of Italian coachbuilding would lead to Marc Deschamps\u2019 first true concept car: the 1972 GS Camargue. <em>\u201cGandini and Pagliano were swamped with work for the Turin and Brussels motor shows and their ongoing projects. There was a car to be designed for the Geneva Motor Show, but when I arrived at Bertone, I\u2019d just bought my Citro\u00ebn GS and I suggested to Nuccio Bertone that we create a concept car based on this excellent platform.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_29-1024x410.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_29-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_29-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_29-768x308.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_29.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cBertone gave his immediate approval, no doubt because he sensed that he and a major car manufacturer would make a good match.\u201d<\/em> To follow in the footsteps of Peugeot-Pininfarina! <em>\u201cI fully claim the Camargue as my own! \u201d<\/em> So it isn\u2019t a Gandini after all? <em>\u201cMarcello Gandini sort of distanced himself from it! But in a very elegant way. He\u2019s always been easy to work with. The only part of the car he designed was the right-hand side of the dashboard, by repositioning the GS\u2019s distinctive handbrake vertically\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_07-1024x682.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_07-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_07-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_07-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_07.png 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The relationship between Marc Deschamps and Citro\u00ebn at Bertone began with the 1972 Camargue, but there were numerous other collaborations, such as the 1986 Zabrus concept car, based on the BX 4 TC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cI also remember that the seats in that very special GS came from a Lamborghini Espada! And what\u2019s particularly worth noting is that, at the time, we\u2019d built this prototype in just five weeks \u2013 from the initial sketches to the finished concept, including the design drawings and the bodywork\u2026 Bertone really did have some fabulous blokes! \u201d<\/em> And it wasn\u2019t just Bertone, according to Deschamps: <em>\u201cTurin was a motorist\u2019s paradise.\u201d<\/em> And yet, barely a year after that first experience, Marc Deschamps followed his heart and answered the call of Madame Chapron. It proved to be a disaster for Marc, as that French coachbuilder was unable, at the time, to rise to certain challenges posed by changes in the industry. <em>\u201cIt\u2019s not widely known, but Chapron was producing prototypes for Renault; there was a definite market there, but Madame Chapron was more of a hobbyist than a proper businesswoman\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"642\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_28-1024x642.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_28-1024x642.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_28-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_28-768x482.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_28.jpg 1387w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Following his stints at Chapron and Ligier, Marc Deschamps produced two small scale models of his own Citro\u00ebn GS coup\u00e9.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Having settled in France, Marc Deschamps remained in the country, a little further south: in the Allier, where he joined Ligier in 1975. <em>\u201cAh! Ligier! Everything was a problem there, but the man was strong, powerful and convincing. I carried out two major projects for him: the bodywork design for the first Ligier F1 car, the JS5 developed by Choulet, and the successor to the SM, which Guy wanted to put into production to keep his small factory running.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_04-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_04-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_04-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_04-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_04.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cIt was a more compact and rather mad Citro\u00ebn GS Birotor coup\u00e9<\/em>, <em>as Alfieri wanted to fit a V4 engine to it. The GZ\u2019s (the GS Birotor\u2019s code name) handling was fabulous, with exceptional suspension and drivetrain qualities. That was actually when I bought my GS Birotor, which is still in Modena. It\u2019s done 110,000 km!\u201d<\/em> A GS Birotor with far greater staying power than the contract binding Ligier to Deschamps\u2026 For in 1976, he returned to the atmosphere of a major manufacturer\u2019s design office, this time at Renault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"712\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_05-1024x712.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_05-1024x712.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_05-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_05-768x534.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_05.png 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">At Renault, Marc Deschamps is involved in the project for a new Alpine range with a design \u2013 shown here in digital form \u2013 that is very futuristic and, unsurprisingly, was not selected!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em><em>\u201cIt was here that I realised that a designer is not there to build a personal career, but to solve a problem posed by the manufacturer and to satisfy the customer. Bernard Hanon wanted it exactly as it was produced: unremarkable. And he wanted it that way to compete with the Peugeot 305, which was giving him a lot of trouble. However, this model was produced at Bertone, at a time when Marc had not yet returned as head of design at the Italian <em>carrozzeria<\/em>: he would take up that post at the end of 1979.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">At Renault, he managed these projects under the supervision of two giants of automotive design: Gaston Juchet and Robert Opron. <em>\u201cIt was Bernard Hanon who brought Opron to Renault in 1975, whilst he had been head of design at Citro\u00ebn since 1964. He thought Opron would be the sort of person capable of shaking up the system, but it didn\u2019t quite work out that way. Opron always saw himself as a bit of a boss. Unlike Gaston Juchet, a decent, cultured chap who really loved cars.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_33-1024x439.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_33-1024x439.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_33-300x129.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_33-768x329.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_33.png 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Before returning to Bertone in 1979, Marc Deschamps defined the styling of the very first R25: at the time, it was nearly\u2026 5 metres long! This was the \u2018M\u2019 prototype, which had been tested as early as 1978.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Then, in 1979, whilst his baby, the Renault 5 Turbo, had not yet gone into production, Marc was called back by Bertone to take over from Gandini. <em>\u201cHe left because he\u2019d pretty much done everything there was to do at Bertone and he dreamt of a deal with a major French carmaker. That turned out to be Renault, for whom he would go on to design not only the Magnum lorry but also the Supercinq.\u201d<\/em> Marc Deschamps\u2019 second spell at Bertone proved to be extremely prolific, lasting from 1979 to 1993.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_12-1024x690.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_12-1024x690.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_12-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_12-768x517.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_12.png 1528w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">As well as the concept cars we are familiar with, he designed for major manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo, Honda, Mazda and Citro\u00ebn. But above all, he worked alongside the master Nuccio Bertone, <em>\u2018an extraordinary character, with the ability to place blind trust in others. He never second-guessed his judgement or wavered in his trust. The relationship was extremely straightforward. It was only with my Genesis project<\/em> \u2013 a Lamborghini MPV with a front-mounted V12 engine, pictured above \u2013 <em>that he was a little concerned. He came round several times to check on it, but it all went well, even if I must have given him a few headaches!\u2019<\/em> As for the downfall of the <em>carrozzeria<\/em>, which was never sold, it\u2019s clear that Marc Deschamps doesn\u2019t want to dwell too much on that terrible period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_13-1024x619.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_13-1024x619.png 1024w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_13-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_13-768x464.png 768w, https:\/\/lignesauto.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/MD_13.png 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">During his long tenure as head of design at Bertone, Marc Deschamps had the opportunity in 1990 to tackle the legend of the Bugatti brand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em>\u201cWhen Nuccio stepped back, his wife Lili was out of the business. Their two daughters found themselves with their backs against the wall. Nuccio Bertone didn\u2019t foresee what would become of his company, and the others just ran a shambles of a show. What\u2019s so sad is that before that, we\u2019d enjoyed a golden age, but we didn\u2019t really realise it at the time. With the closure of the Bertone carrozzeria, we\u2019ve witnessed the end of an era. Turin is now a thing of the past\u2026\u2019<\/em> Before we part ways, Marc adds that he\u2019d like to put an end to a rumour that he\u2019s\u2026 Belgian! \u2018<em>It makes me laugh because I\u2019m very much French! My father ran a small glue factory in Vincennes and had bought a small factory near Orl\u00e9ans. When I last contacted Marc Deschamps a while ago to arrange another meeting, it was Eduardo Botero \u2013 one of his friends and a former colleague who had become his administrative assistant and carer \u2013 who replied. He informed me that \u201c<em>Marc Deschamps had an accident at home; he fell some time ago and, unfortunately, he is in very poor health today. He will be laid to rest at Caprie Cemetery, situated west of Turin in the Val Susa valley, where the Bertone design studio once stood. I like to imagine that he would have liked that.<\/em>\u201d Yes, he would have liked that\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em><em>Thank you to Eduardo Botero.
