\nIl a rejoint cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0 Jean-Pierre Plou\u00e9 chez PSA pour \u00eatre nomm\u00e9 directeur du style Citro\u00ebn avant de prendre la direction du style de la “ligne” Citro\u00ebn-DS un an apr\u00e8s.
\nIl est tout naturellement devenu le patron du design de la marque DS \u00e0 la naissance de cette derni\u00e8re, en 2014.<\/p>\n

Nous avions rencontr\u00e9 Thierry M\u00e9troz \u00e0 cette occasion.\u00a0A l’\u00e9poque d\u00e9j\u00e0, il tra\u00e7ait les grandes lignes de l’identit\u00e9 de cette marque nouvellement cr\u00e9\u00e9e.
\n“Notre ambition est qu’elle porte les valeurs du\u00a0luxe\u00a0\u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise partout dans le monde”<\/i> nous disait-il alors en d\u00e9voilant le concept-car Divine (ci-dessous)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nous le retrouvons quatre ans plus tard, \u00e0 l’occasion du Mondial de l’automobile en ce d\u00e9but du mois d’octobre pour une rencontre \u00e0 (presque) mi-parcourt de la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation du plan produit imagin\u00e9 pour cette seconde renaissance de la marque DS.\u00a0Apr\u00e8s la DS7 Crossback, c’est au tour de la “petite” DS3 Crossback (ci-dessous)<\/strong> d’\u00eatre r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e.

LIGNES\/auto : DS3 Crossback a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au Mondial de Paris mais avant cela,\u00a0elle l\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 dans votre tout nouveau studio de design. Parlez-nous en !
\n<\/strong>Thierry M\u00e9troz : C\u2019est quelque chose que je voulais voir aboutir depuis longtemps.\u00a0Parce qu\u2019il y a une chose qui est importante pour aller au bout de la qualit\u00e9 intrins\u00e8que de chaque individu, de chaque modeleur num\u00e9rique ou designer, c\u2019est d\u2019avoir un mode d\u2019organisation un peu avant-gardiste.\u00a0Alors oui, notre studio ce design est sans doute diff\u00e9rent de tous ceux qui existent sur la plan\u00e8te\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Diff\u00e9rent dans quelle mesure\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Nous sommes un peu structur\u00e9s comme une Start-Up\u00a0!\u00a0C\u2019est diff\u00e9rent des deux autres studios de l\u2019ADN (Peugeot et Citro\u00ebn NDA<\/em>) par son implantation notamment.
\nOn a profit\u00e9 de l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 d\u2019un espace qui se lib\u00e9rait pour concr\u00e9tiser ce studio qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 termin\u00e9 un peu avant l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9.\u00a0En fait, nous l\u2019avons en quelque sorte inaugur\u00e9 au moment de la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation de DS3 Crossback.<\/p>\n

\nLes deux derniers concept-cars de DS : au fond, l’E-TENSE et au premier plan, la maquette de la X E-TENSE.<\/em><\/p>\n

C\u2019est une organisation nouvelle pour un bureau de design\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Nous devons \u00eatre les seuls \u00e0 \u00eatre structur\u00e9 ainsi.\u00a0Nous avons toutes les \u00e9quipes sur un m\u00eame plateau\u00a0: les designers \u00ab\u00a0exter\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0inter\u00a0\u00bb mais aussi ce qu\u2019on appelle le \u00ab\u00a0lighting\u00a0\u00bb (optiques et feux, etc), les designers couleurs et mati\u00e8res sans oublier les modeleurs \u2018num\u00e9rique\u2019.\u00a0Les \u00e9changes sont facilit\u00e9s et surtout, rapides.\u00a0C\u2019est incroyablement efficace.<\/p>\n

Combien de personnes travaillent sur ce plateau\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Nous avons un effectif global d\u2019une soixantaine de personnes maximum, avec comme cr\u00e9atifs purs, une vingtaine de designers inter, exter et lighting (ci-dessous, DS E-TENSE)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Avez-vous d\u2019autres \u00ab\u00a0outils\u00a0\u00bb que ce seul plateau\u00a0?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : Nous avons une salle de maquettage qu\u2019on appelle la \u00ab\u00a0digital room<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0C\u2019est une immense salle de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 virtuelle pour r\u00e9aliser notre travail de modelage num\u00e9rique, un endroit magique o\u00f9 nous pouvons visualiser nos travaux en 3D sur un gigantesque \u00e9cran\u00a0! Cette salle est d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 la marque DS.<\/p>\n

\nLa r\u00e9alisation du concept-car DS X E-TENSE a \u00e9t\u00e9 effectu\u00e9e en un temps record !<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00c0 vous \u00e9couter, vous concevez vos produits principalement via le num\u00e9rique\u00a0!
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Je pense que nous sommes parmi les leaders \u00e0 ce niveau. Je dirais qu\u2019au style, nous r\u00e9alisons 80 % du d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019un nouveau produit en num\u00e9rique.<\/p>\n

Ce nouveau studio de design DS peut-il servir de laboratoire pour les deux autres marques\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Cette organisation est propre \u00e0 DS et surtout, adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 DS.\u00a0C\u2019est une \u00e9quipe compacte, plus r\u00e9duite que celles des autres marques du groupe, ce qui est logique si vous comparez l\u2019\u00e9tendue des diff\u00e9rentes gammes.\u00a0La direction l\u2019a annonc\u00e9\u00a0: DS va lancer six v\u00e9hicules d\u2019ici 2022. Deux sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9voil\u00e9s avec DS7 Crossback et DS3 Crossback.\u00a0Nous sommes donc logiquement dimensionn\u00e9s pour ces programmes\u2026<\/p>\n

Le choix du th\u00e8me de design se concr\u00e9tise-t-il en num\u00e9rique ou par le biais d\u2019une maquette physique\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Comme je vous l\u2019ai dit, nous sommes tr\u00e8s efficaces pour travailler nos projets en num\u00e9rique mais \u00e9videmment, au final, nous \u2018fraisons\u2019 des maquettes \u00e9chelle 1.\u00a0Mais celles-ci ne sont pas r\u00e9alis\u00e9es en vue du choix du th\u00e8me de style qui, lui, est fait en num\u00e9rique.\u00a0Les maquettes \u00e9chelle 1 sont l\u00e0 pour optimiser la mise au point du style retenu.<\/p>\n

\nThierry M\u00e9troz sur le terrain. A droite, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Soubirou \u00e0 qui l’on doit l’origine du design DS puisqu’il a dessin\u00e9 la DS3 !<\/em><\/p>\n

S\u2019il y a une grosse boulette lors du choix en num\u00e9rique, vous n\u2019avez donc plus le temps de conception n\u00e9cessaire pour remettre tout d\u2019aplomb\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Il n’y a pas de grosse boulette ! On s\u00e9curise tout \u00e0 chaque \u00e9tape de la gestation du produit.\u00a0La grosse boulette ne pourrait concerner que les proportions mais ce domaine, nous le ma\u00eetrisons parfaitement en num\u00e9rique.\u00a0Lors des premi\u00e8res phases de d\u00e9veloppement en digital, nous r\u00e9alisons quand m\u00eame des maquettes en mousse, hyper pr\u00e9cises et tr\u00e8s rapides \u00e0 fraiser.\u00a0Elles nous permettent de valider les grandes masses, les proportions.\u00a0Une grosse boulette, ce serait lorsqu\u2019on travaille dans la zone des 3 \u00e0 4 centim\u00e8tres\u00a0!
\nAvec nos maquettes \u00e9chelle 1, on travaille uniquement sur la mise au point du style, dans une fourchette qui n\u2019exc\u00e8de jamais le centim\u00e8tre.<\/p>\n

Avoir pu b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier de la nouvelle plateforme CMP, est-ce une chance pour DS\u00a0?<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Ce que nous avons v\u00e9cu au lancement du programme de la DS3 Crossback est assez rare\u00a0: faire co\u00efncider le d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019une nouvelle plateforme avec le lancement d\u2019un nouveau produit. C\u2019est vraiment g\u00e9nial pour les designers\u00a0!\u00a0Lorsque nous avons commenc\u00e9 nos travaux sur DS3 Crossback \u00e0 la fin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 2014, la conception de la plateforme venait d\u2019\u00eatre lanc\u00e9e.\u00a0Nous avons pu faire les premi\u00e8res it\u00e9rations d\u2019avance de style avec cette nouvelle base technique.<\/p>\n

\nLes dessous de la DS3 Crossback. Cette plateforme est capable d’accueillir de tr\u00e8s grandes roues pour am\u00e9liorer le design des silhouettes qui l’habilleront.<\/em><\/p>\n

Un hasard du calendrier finalement\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Non, car il \u00e9tait act\u00e9 bien avant que DS serait la marque qui allait lancer cette plateforme.\u00a0Nous avons eu la chance ainsi de pouvoir travailler avec les \u00e9quipes de l\u2019ing\u00e9nierie sur la conception m\u00eame de la CMP.<\/p>\n

Comment le design interagit avec les d\u00e9cideurs de la technique\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Nous les avons challeng\u00e9s<\/em> et ils nous ont suivi sur notre volont\u00e9 d\u2019avoir les plus grandes roues du segment : jusqu\u2019\u00e0 690 mm, ce n\u2019est pas rien.\u00a0Nous voulions aussi des voies les plus larges possibles et pouvoir b\u00e2tir sur cette CMP un style avec un capot long, des porte-\u00e0-faux courts, etc.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Au sein du groupe PSA, chaque marque a trouv\u00e9 -ou va le faire assez vite (je pense \u00e0 Opel)- sa propre identit\u00e9. Quelle est celle de DS\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : La diff\u00e9renciation entre nos marques au sein du groupe rel\u00e8ve du travail de Jean-Pierre Plou\u00e9.\u00a0C\u2019est une partie de son job de s\u2019assurer que malgr\u00e9 le fait que, comme dans tous les grands groupes automobiles nous partageons des plateformes et des composants communs, l\u2019identit\u00e9 des produits Citro\u00ebn, Peugeot ou DS \u00e9voque des territoires totalement diff\u00e9rents.<\/p>\n

\nSi vous ne l’avez pas encore remarqu\u00e9, le logo DS est constitu\u00e9 de “chevrons”, un seul pour la lettre “D” et deux superpos\u00e9s pour la lettre “S”.
\nSi le nom de Citro\u00ebn n’appara\u00eet \u00e9videmment plus sur les carrosseries des DS, l’esprit des chevrons reste bien pr\u00e9sent !<\/i><\/p>\n

Chez Peugeot, on parle d\u2019\u00e9motions, d\u2019efficience, de dynamisme. Et chez DS, quels mots utilisez-vous ?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Chez DS, ce n\u2019est pas compliqu\u00e9\u00a0: il y en a deux auxquels j\u2019ajouterai une ambition. Ces mots sont\u00a0: technologie et raffinement.\u00a0Pour le premier, nous voulons porter les meilleures technologies disponibles dans le groupe.\u00a0Nous avons aussi la capacit\u00e9 de d\u00e9velopper des technologies propres \u00e0 la marque DS au sein du groupe, d\u2019avoir des composants ou modules sp\u00e9cifiques.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est-\u00e0-dire\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Je prends un exemple\u00a0qui va avoir un impact fort sur le grand public\u00a0: ce sont les poign\u00e9es de portes affleurantes de la DS3 Crossback.\u00a0C\u2019est une demande conjointe du produit et du style pour apporter une modernit\u00e9 affirm\u00e9e.\u00a0C\u00f4t\u00e9 style, c\u2019est fabuleux car on enfante un flanc extr\u00eamement simple, \u00e7a rend le design lisse et renforce jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 per\u00e7ue.
\nEt puis il y a le c\u00f4t\u00e9 magique avec ce c\u00e9r\u00e9monial fabuleux lorsqu\u2019on s\u2019approche de la voiture et que les poign\u00e9es \u00e9mergent. \u00c7a fait partie de la magie.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Vous allez vous faire chiper l\u2019id\u00e9e par vos amis de Peugeot et Citro\u00ebn\u00a0!<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : Non, c\u2019est typiquement un module propre \u00e0 la marque DS.\u00a0Nous nous sommes battus pour \u00e7a. Alors oui, \u00e7a co\u00fbte \u00e9videmment plus cher que des poign\u00e9es classiques parce que cela implique un d\u00e9veloppement plus long.\u00a0Nous avons pu cependant l\u2019int\u00e9grer assez t\u00f4t dans le d\u00e9veloppement de la DS3 Crossback.<\/p>\n

M\u00eame id\u00e9e pour le module d\u2019\u00e9clairage Matrix\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Oui, ce deuxi\u00e8me module est l\u00e0 aussi sp\u00e9cifique \u00e0 la marque DS.\u00a0Il a fait partie du cahier des charges \u2018produit\u2019 et nous en avons eu connaissance d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de nos travaux afin de l\u2019int\u00e9grer au mieux.\u00a0L\u2019\u00e9clairage Matrix, ce n\u2019est pas que du style ou de la technique. C\u2019est une prestation extraordinaire pour le client car la voiture pilote le projecteur\u2026\u00a0Vous pouvez toujours rouler en plein phares et le syst\u00e8me g\u00e8re automatiquement le r\u00e9glage pour ne pas \u00e9blouir une voiture venant en face ou circulant devant vous.\u00a0C\u2019est vraiment bluffant\u00a0!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Vous \u00e9voquiez \u00e9galement le mot de raffinement pour l\u2019identit\u00e9 de la marque DS\u2026
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Le raffinement rejoint l\u2019ambition de la marque qui est d\u2019incarner dans le monde automobile, le savoir-faire du luxe fran\u00e7ais.\u00a0C\u2019est assur\u00e9ment l\u2019un des ingr\u00e9dients pour arriver \u00e0 se diff\u00e9rencier du ‘premium’ allemand.\u00a0C\u2019est cette expression du luxe fran\u00e7ais que l\u2019on retrouve notamment dans nos int\u00e9rieurs (ci-dessous, la planche de bord de la DS3 Crossback)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Revenons aux d\u00e9buts de la marque DS : l<\/strong>e concept-car Divine\u00a0demeure-t-il le jalon fort du design de la marque\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Oui, sans conteste.\u00a0Nous l\u2019avons pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en 2014 en m\u00eame temps que le groupe annon\u00e7ait la naissance de DS.\u00a0C\u2019est le concept-car fondateur de la marque.<\/p>\n

\nLe designer Damien Fressard est l’auteur du style du concept-car Divine de 2014, fondateur de la marque DS.<\/em>
\nLe dessin de ses optiques et de ses feux se retrouve aujourd’hui sur DS7 Crossback. A noter que le coup\u00e9 Divine n’a pas de lunette arri\u00e8re.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, la gamme c\u2019\u00e9tait DS3, DS4 et DS5 : \u00e7a explique que vos concept-cars tr\u00e8s avant-gardistes (E-TENSE, X E-TENSE) ne pouvaient pas s\u2019appuyer sur des mod\u00e8les futurs encore non d\u00e9finis\u00a0?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : Non. Pour nous, un concept-car de DS3 Crossback deux ans avant sa sortie n\u2019avait aucun sens.\u00a0Ce type de pr\u00e9sentation ne nous int\u00e9resse pas franchement, ce n\u2019est pas notre strat\u00e9gie ni notre philosophie.<\/p>\n

\nEn juillet 2014, alors que la marque DS prend son envol avec le concept-car Divine, Thierry M\u00e9troz est entour\u00e9 de son commando !<\/em>

\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Nos concept-cars sont \u00e9videmment l\u2019expression du style de la marque et sont des acc\u00e9l\u00e9rateurs d\u2019\u00e9volutions.\u00a0Nous n\u2019avons pas de contrainte \u00e0 respecter, nous avons carte blanche.\u00a0Nous sommes plus dans l\u2019univers des dream-cars<\/em>.\u00a0Mais ne vous y trompez pas, il y a une chose \u00e0 laquelle nous sommes tr\u00e8s attach\u00e9s : chaque concept nourrit un v\u00e9hicule de s\u00e9rie.<\/p>\n

Ce n\u2019est pas flagrant lorsqu\u2019on voit la DS3 Crossback\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Quand vous regardez la planche de bord de DS3 Crossback, vous retrouvez le th\u00e8me d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu sur le concept E-TENSE avec l\u2019int\u00e9gration de notre trame DS.\u00a0Avec E-TENSE, nous avions cr\u00e9\u00e9 un coup\u00e9 et ce concept d\u2019architecture parle \u00e0 tout le monde\u00a0!\u00a0Sur un concept-car, ce sont les ingr\u00e9dients de style \u2013 comme la calandre, les optiques, les feux – qui sont connect\u00e9s aux v\u00e9hicules de s\u00e9rie et qui les nourrissent en direct.\u00a0Le concept E-TENSE a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en 2016 mais dessin\u00e9 en 2015.\u00a0C\u2019est la p\u00e9riode pendant laquelle on dessinait par ailleurs la DS3 Crossback et E-TENSE a naturellement nourri son design.<\/p>\n

\nLe concept-car E-TENSE, deux ans apr\u00e8s Divine, emprunte les codes du coup\u00e9.
\nIl a \u00e9t\u00e9 dessin\u00e9 en m\u00eame temps que d\u00e9butaient les travaux sur le style de la DS3 Crossback.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Cette strat\u00e9gie des concept-cars tr\u00e8s futuristes est-elle p\u00e9renne\u00a0d\u00e8s lors qu\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, vous avez une vision claire de votre future gamme \u00e0 six mod\u00e8les\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : On peut imaginer qu\u2019on fasse des r\u00e9glages par la suite, pourquoi pas.\u00a0C\u2019est vrai qu\u2019avec DS X E-TENSE on a pouss\u00e9 les curseurs tr\u00e8s loin, notamment sur l\u2019aspect de la voiture autonome.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Elle vous inqui\u00e8te cette voiture \u00e9lectrique, autonome et connect\u00e9e ?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Ce qui me traumatise en ce moment, c\u2019est cette esp\u00e8ce de pens\u00e9e unique, \u00ab\u00a0d\u2019Appelisation<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb du design.\u00a0Certains constructeurs qui imaginent le futur autonome ou \u00e9lectrique perdent leur identit\u00e9 de marque.\u00a0Ils enfantent des objets sans caract\u00e8re, compl\u00e9tement insipides. Il ne faut jamais perdre la notion d\u2019\u00e9motion en automobile\u00a0!\u00a0Notre DS X E-TENSE est tout l\u2019inverse de ces concepts st\u00e9r\u00e9otyp\u00e9s.\u00a0Son c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u00e9monstratif est intense\u00a0: il y a un c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Wahooo<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb lorsque vous la d\u00e9couvrez\u00a0!\u00a0Vous ne vous retrouvez pas devant une machine \u00e0 laver ou une cabine de t\u00e9l\u00e9ph\u00e9rique\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Donc, pas de crainte pour le designer face \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des voitures \u00e9lectriques, autonomes et connect\u00e9es\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Je reste persuad\u00e9 au contraire que l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des plateformes d\u00e9di\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9lectrique va offrir bien plus de libert\u00e9 de style en r\u00e9duisant les contraintes d\u2019architectures classiques.\u00a0Mais il est vrai que les concept-cars de certains constructeurs ne refl\u00e8tent pas encore cette libert\u00e9. \u00c7a m\u2019affole m\u00eame\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Nous serions dans une phase de transition dans la mutation annonc\u00e9e\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Th.M. : Oui, et \u00e7a se comprend. Ces voitures que j\u2019\u00e9voque ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es dans l\u2019urgence et \u00e7a se voit.\u00a0Elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 parfois con\u00e7ues sur des plateformes ou des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de plateformes existants. Voire, en \u00e9lectrifiant des mod\u00e8les thermiques.\u00a0La priorit\u00e9 dans leur cas \u00e9tait d\u2019\u00eatre pr\u00e9sent sur le march\u00e9 du full\u00a0<\/em>\u00e9lectrique.<\/p>\n

Interview with Thierry M\u00e9troz (*), design director of the DS brand within the PSA group.<\/strong><\/p>\n

(*) Thierry M\u00e9troz was a Renault designer and was on the list of candidates for Patrick Le Qu\u00e9ment’s succession in 2009.
\nThat year, he joined Jean-Pierre Plou\u00e9 at PSA to be appointed Citro\u00ebn style director before taking over the direction of the Citro\u00ebn-DS “line” style a year later.
\nHe naturally became the design boss of the DS brand when it was born in 2014.<\/p>\n

We met Thierry Metroz on that occasion.\u00a0At the time, he was already outlining the identity of this newly created brand.
\n“Our ambition is that it should carry the values of French luxury everywhere in the world”<\/em> he told us then by unveiling the Divine concept car (below)<\/p>\n

We meet him four years later, on the occasion of the Paris Motor Show at the beginning of 2018 October for a meeting at the (almost) halfway point of the revelation of the product plan designed for this second renaissance of the DS brand.\u00a0After the DS7 Crossback, it’s the turn of the “little” DS3 Crossback (below) to be revealed.\u00a0While waiting for the next step….<\/p>\n

LIGNES\/auto : DS3 Crossback was presented at the 2018 Paris Motor Show but before that, it was presented in your brand new design studio. Tell us about it !<\/strong>
\nThierry M\u00e9troz : “It’s something I’ve wanted to see happen for a long time.\u00a0Because one thing that is important to go to the end of the intrinsic quality of each individual, each digital modeller or designer, is to have a somewhat avant-garde<\/em> organizational mode.\u00a0So yes, our studio this design is probably different from all those that exist on the planet !”<\/p>\n

Different to what extent ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “We are a bit structured like a Start-Up !\u00a0It is different from the other two DNA studios (Peugeot and Citro\u00ebn NDA) in particular because of its location.\u00a0We took advantage of the opportunity of a space that was free to make this studio a reality. It was completed just before the summer.\u00a0In fact, we kind of inaugurated it at the time of the DS3 Crossback revelation”.<\/p>\n

Is this a new organization for a design office ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “We must be the only ones to be structured in this way.\u00a0We have all the teams on the same stage : the “external” and “inter” designers but also what is called “lighting” (optics and lights, etc.), the color and material designers without forgetting the “digital” modelers.\u00a0Exchanges are facilitated and above all, fast.\u00a0It’s incredibly effective.”<\/p>\n

How many people work on this set ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “We have a global staff of about sixty people maximum, with as pure creative, about twenty inter, exter and lighting designers (below, DS E-TENSE).”<\/p>\n

Do you have any other “tools” than this single tray ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “We have a modeling room called the “digital room”.\u00a0It’s a huge virtual reality room to do our digital modelling work, a magical place where we can visualize our work in 3D on a huge screen ! This room is dedicated to the DS brand.”<\/p>\n

Listening to you, you design your products mainly via digital !<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “I think we are among the leaders at this level. I would say that in terms of style, we achieve 80% of the development of a new digital product.”<\/p>\n

Can this new DS design studio be used as a laboratory for the other two brands ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “This organization is specific to DS and, above all, adapted to DS.\u00a0It is a compact team, smaller than those of the other brands in the group, which is logical if you compare the scope of the different ranges.\u00a0Management has announced it: DS will launch six vehicles by 2022. Two are already unveiled with DS7 Crossback and DS3 Crossback.\u00a0We are therefore logically sized for these programs….”<\/p>\n

Does the choice of design theme take place digitally or through a physical model ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “As I told you, we are very efficient at working on our projects in digital, but obviously, in the end, we’re milling scale 1 models.\u00a0But these are not carried out in view of the choice of the style theme, which is done digitally.\u00a0The scale 1 models are there to optimize the development of the chosen style.”<\/p>\n

If there is a big dumpling when choosing a digital project, you no longer have the design time to get everything back on track ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “There is no such thing as a big dumpling ! Everything is secured at every stage of the product’s gestation.\u00a0The big dumpling could only concern the proportions, but we have a perfect command of this field in digital technology.\u00a0During the first phases of digital development, we still produce foam models, which are very precise and very fast to mill.\u00a0They allow us to validate the large masses, the proportions.\u00a0A big dumpling would be when you work in the 3 to 4 centimeter zone!\u00a0With our scale 1 models, we only work on the development of the style, in a range that never exceeds one centimeter.”<\/p>\n

Is it an opportunity for DS to have benefited from the new CMP platform ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : ”\u00a0What we experienced at the launch of the DS3 Crossback program is quite rare: aligning the development of a new platform with the launch of a new product. It’s really great for designers!\u00a0When we started work on DS3 Crossback at the end of 2014, the platform design had just been launched.\u00a0We were able to do the first iterations in advance of style with this new technical base.”<\/p>\n

A coincidence of the calendar after all ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “No, because it was recorded long before DS would be the brand that would launch this platform.\u00a0We were fortunate enough to be able to work with the engineering teams on the design of the CMP itself.”<\/p>\n

How does design interact with technical decision-makers ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : ‘We challenged them and they followed us on our desire to have the largest wheels in the segment: up to 690 mm, that’s not nothing.”<\/p>\n

Within the PSA group, each brand has found – or will soon do so (I am thinking of Opel) – its own identity. What is DS’ ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “The differentiation between our brands within the group is the work of Jean-Pierre Plou\u00e9.\u00a0It is part of his job to ensure that, despite the fact that, as in all major automotive groups, we share common platforms and components, the identity of Citro\u00ebn, Peugeot and DS products evokes totally different territories.”<\/p>\n

\nIf you have not yet noticed, the DS logo consists of “chevrons”, only one for the letter “D” and two overlays for the letter “S”.<\/em>
\nWhile the Citro\u00ebn name obviously no longer appears on the DS’ bodies, the spirit of the chevrons remains very much alive!<\/em><\/p>\n

At Peugeot, we talk about emotions, efficiency and dynamism. And at DS, what words do you use ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “At DS, it’s not complicated: there are two to which I would add an ambition. These words are : technology and refinement.\u00a0For the first, we want to bring the best technologies available in the group.\u00a0We also have the ability to develop technologies specific to the DS brand within the group, to have specific components or modules.”<\/p>\n

What do you mean ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Let me take an example that will have a strong impact on the general public: these are the DS3 Crossback’s flush door handles.\u00a0It is a joint demand of the product and style to bring an asserted modernity.\u00a0In terms of style, it’s fabulous because you give birth to an extremely simple flank, it makes the design smooth and reinforces it up to the perceived quality.\u00a0And then there’s the magic side with this fabulous ceremony when you approach the car and the handles emerge. It’s part of the magic.”<\/p>\n

You’re going to get the idea from your friends at Peugeot and Citro\u00ebn !<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “No, it is typically a module specific to the DS brand.\u00a0We fought for that. So yes, it obviously costs more than conventional handles because it involves a longer development time.\u00a0However, we were able to integrate it early on in the development of the DS3 Crossback.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Same idea for the Matrix lighting module ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nTh.M. :”Yes, this second module is also specific to the DS brand.\u00a0It was part of the ‘product’ specifications and we were aware of it from the beginning of our work in order to integrate it as well as possible.\u00a0Matrix lighting is not just about style or technique. This is an extraordinary service for the customer because the car drives the headlamp…\u00a0You can always drive with full headlights and the system automatically manages the setting so as not to dazzle a car coming in front of you or driving in front of you.
\nIt’s really amazing !”<\/p>\n

You also mentioned the word refinement for the identity of the DS brand….<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Refinement is in line with the brand’s ambition to embody the know-how of French luxury in the automotive world.\u00a0It is certainly one of the ingredients to differentiate yourself from the German premium.\u00a0It is this expression of French luxury that we find in our interiors (below, the dashboard of the DS3 Crossback).”<\/p>\n

Let’s go back to the beginnings of the DS brand: does the Divine concept car remain the strong milestone in the brand’s design ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Yes, without a doubt.\u00a0We presented it in 2014 at the same time as the group announced the birth of DS.\u00a0This is the brand’s founding concept car.”<\/p>\n

\nDesigner Damien Fressard is the author of the style of the Divine concept car of 2014, founder of the DS brand.<\/em>
\nThe design of its optics and lights is now found on DS7 Crossback. Note that the Divine Coupe does not have a rear window.<\/em><\/p>\n

At the time, the range was DS3, DS4 and DS5 : that explains why your very avant-garde concept cars (E-TENSE, X E-TENSE) could not be based on future models not yet defined ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “No. For us, a DS3 Crossback concept car two years before its release made no sense.\u00a0This type of presentation does not interest us frankly, it is not our strategy or our philosophy.”<\/p>\n

\nIn July 2014, as the DS brand took off with the Divine concept car, Thierry Metroz was surrounded by his commando!<\/em>

You push the sliders very far forward with the DS X E-TENSE. Tomorrow, will you present more rational concepts in line with the next DS range ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Our concept cars are obviously the expression of the brand’s style and are accelerators of evolution.\u00a0We have no constraints to respect, we have carte blanche.\u00a0We are more in the world of dream cars.\u00a0But make no mistake, there is one thing we are very attached to : each concept feeds a production vehicle.”<\/p>\n

Isn’t it obvious when you see the DS3 Crossback ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “When you look at the DS3 Crossback dashboard, you will find the theme already seen on the E-TENSE concept with the integration of our DS frame.\u00a0With E-TENSE, we created a coup\u00e9 and this architectural concept speaks to everyone!\u00a0In a concept car, it is the stylish ingredients – such as the grille, optics, lights – that are connected to the production vehicles and feed them directly.\u00a0The E-TENSE concept was presented in 2016 but designed in 2015.\u00a0This was the period during which the DS3 Crossback was designed and E-TENSE naturally fed into its design.”<\/p>\n

\nThe E-TENSE concept car, two years after Divine, borrows the codes of the coup\u00e9.
\nIt was designed at the same time as work began on the DS3 Crossback’s style.<\/em><\/p>\n

Is this strategy of very futuristic concept cars sustainable since today you have a clear vision of your future six-model range ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “We can imagine that we will make adjustments later on, why not.\u00a0It is true that with DS X E-TENSE we have pushed the sliders very far, especially on the appearance of the autonomous car.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Are you worried about this electric, autonomous and connected car ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “What is traumatizing me right now is this kind of unique thinking, “Appelisation<\/em>” of design.\u00a0Some manufacturers who imagine the autonomous or electric future lose their brand identity.\u00a0They give birth to objects without character, completely insipid. You must never lose the notion of emotion in the car !\u00a0Our DS X E-TENSE is the complete opposite of these stereotypical concepts.\u00a0Its demonstrative side is intense: there is a “Wahooo” side when you discover it !\u00a0You don’t find yourself in front of a washing machine or a cable car !”<\/p>\n

So, no fear for the designer when faced with the arrival of electric, autonomous and connected cars ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “On the contrary, I remain convinced that the arrival of platforms dedicated to electrical technology will offer much more freedom of style by reducing the constraints of traditional architectures.\u00a0But it is true that the concept cars of some manufacturers do not yet reflect this freedom. It even freaks me out !”<\/p>\n

We would be in a transitional phase in the announced mutation ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Yes, and that’s understandable. These cars I’m talking about were built in a hurry and it shows.\u00a0They have sometimes been designed on existing platforms or platform elements. Or even by electrifying thermal models.\u00a0The priority in their case was to be present in the full electric market.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So there will be a follow-up to this generation conceived in a hurry ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Yes, there will be a second generation. We should probably let the programs mature for another four to five years.\u00a0This next generation full electric vehicle will be more mature, more thoughtful and will incorporate the latest technologies.\u00a0And it is there that you will discover a real breakthrough in terms of style and architecture.”<\/p>\n

Let’s go back to your future range. What we see today are two SUVs, while the very name of your brand refers to an iconic sedan…<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Today, you have noticed that SUVs are a solid trend, even if we, as manufacturers, are already thinking about the post-SUV era.\u00a0But of course there will be a DS sedan in the range because you MUST have one.\u00a0A super elegant, highly technological sedan…\u00a0Not every customer in the world rushes only on SUVs !\u00a0There are still customers for a beautiful sedan, low, dynamic and fluid, if only for comfort.”<\/p>\n

\nThe 2012 “Citro\u00ebn” DS Number 9 concept car was already, two years later, in the process of becoming obsolete.<\/em>
\nBut today, with the new DS design codes, we can imagine what the future DS sedan will look like…. How many, by the way?<\/em><\/p>\n

Who will have the priority of revealing his sedan: Citro\u00ebn or DS ?<\/strong>
\nTh.M. : “Within the PSA group, there has been no censorship, to say that if DS makes a sedan, Citro\u00ebn does not make one or the other way around.\u00a0The right answer is to say that we will do it differently !”<\/p>\n
