En d\u00e9couvrant la maquette de la Peugeot 208 de 2012, l\u2019un des participants \u00e0 la r\u00e9union aurait l\u00e2ch\u00e9\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0elle n\u2019est pas un peu trop petite\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/em>Cette compacit\u00e9 a finalement \u00e9t\u00e9 per\u00e7ue comme un atout.
\nCompacte, l\u00e9g\u00e8re et dynamique, la 208 de 2012 a eu de belles cartes \u00e0 jouer pour affronter les concurrentes du segment B2 et notamment la premi\u00e8re Clio de l\u2019\u00e8re Laurens van den Acker chez Renault. Mais \u00e7a, c\u2019\u00e9tait hier.<\/p>\n

Sept ans apr\u00e8s, avec la nouvelle 208 de 2019, Peugeot change tout. Nouvelle plateforme mais aussi nouveau design. Exit les rondeurs et le c\u00f4t\u00e9 chaton de la pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de 208, place \u00e0 un f\u00e9lin aux volumes bien plus dynamiques et aux crocs ac\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Vous voici en compagnie du designer ext\u00e9rieur de la 208 (Kevin Goncalves) et du responsable design projet de cette nouvelle Peugeot (Yann Beurel). LIGNES\/auto : En d\u00e9couvrant cette nouvelle 208, on a l\u2019impression d\u2019une voiture plus grande, plus dynamique que l\u2019actuelle\u00a0!
\nKevin Goncalves<\/strong>\u00a0: \u00ab La nouvelle 208 est plus longue, plus large et plus basse que l\u2019actuelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Sur ce nouveau projet, on a vraiment travaill\u00e9 en priorit\u00e9 les proportions en reculant le pare-brise. La cabine est plus en arri\u00e8re, le capot devient plus long, plus sculpt\u00e9. Quant au pavillon il a \u00e9t\u00e9 abaiss\u00e9 et il est fuyant, tr\u00e8s dynamique.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Vous aviez une 208 dans le bureau de style au moment de d\u00e9marrer le programme P21\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Non, en r\u00e8gle g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, on va plut\u00f4t chercher ce qui est sorti en dernier du bureau de design. Il faut voir toujours plus loin. La fa\u00e7on dont on raisonne avec Gilles Vidal est de travailler au plus long terme possible. Quelle direction prendre. Pour la 208, notre but \u00e9tait aussi de penser au design int\u00e9rieur avec nos coll\u00e8gues. Une sorte de ping-pong entre les \u00e9quipes ‘inter’ et ‘exter’ qui permet d\u2019aboutir \u00e0 un produit extr\u00eamement coh\u00e9rent.\u00a0\u00bb<\/i><\/p>\n

Vous aviez quand m\u00eame en t\u00eate les 3008, 5008 et 508 qui vous ont un peu trac\u00e9 la voie ?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Chaque voiture qui pointe le bout de son nez ram\u00e8ne \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de la marque.\u00a0<\/em>Avoir la confiance de la marque, c\u2019est g\u00e9nial. Peugeot est arriv\u00e9 sur le march\u00e9 avec une 508 tr\u00e8s aboutie et la 208 est naturellement devenue une \u00ab\u00a0baby 508\u00a0\u00bb, elle va m\u00eame plus loin encore en termes de design. La S\u00e9rie 2, c\u2019est notre porte bonheur\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Ces nouvelles proportions, c\u2019est avant tout gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la nouvelle plateforme\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0: \u00ab Au d\u00e9but du projet, on se voit avec les \u00e9quipes du produit. On savait qu\u2019avec les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes nouveaut\u00e9s (3008, 5008, 508) et la nouvelle plateforme, la 208 serait tir\u00e9e vers le haut, en phase avec la mont\u00e9e en gamme des produits actuels de la marque.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

En quelques mots, vous pouvez nous d\u00e9crire le style de votre b\u00e9b\u00e9\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Avec la baie de pare-brise recul\u00e9e, on conf\u00e8re \u00e0 la 208 une attitude plus sportive sans nuire \u00e0 l\u2019habitabilit\u00e9. En pleine vue arri\u00e8re, le travail fait sur les proportions est peaufin\u00e9 dans les moindres d\u00e9tails. Les ailes font que la voiture est bien camp\u00e9e sur ses roues, cette voiture va bien plus loin que l\u2019A9 (208 actuelle) avec ses hanches plus dessin\u00e9es, sculpt\u00e9es.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Il y a aussi ce capot moteur assez sculpt\u00e9…<\/strong>
\nK.G.\u00a0: \u00abLe capot moteur, bomb\u00e9, est aussi tr\u00e8s travaill\u00e9, tout en pleins et creux associ\u00e9s. On a beaucoup boss\u00e9 les profondeurs d\u2019emboutissage, ce qui permet de faire une voiture avec beaucoup de caract\u00e8re.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Yann Beurel<\/strong>\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Notre m\u00e9tier, c\u2019est un peu de pousser au crime\u00a0! On doit tirer le maximum de ce qu\u2019on peut tirer comme par exemple cette profondeur d\u2019emboutissage pour les ailes. Il a fallu sortir de notre zone de confort et on a donc beaucoup travaill\u00e9 avec les \u00e9quipes de l\u2019emboutissage pour y arriver. On demande toujours aux stylistes d\u2019aller au-del\u00e0 de leurs habitudes, de pousser toujours la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et on tente de v\u00e9hiculer cette notion \u00e0 travers l\u2019entreprise, avec les diff\u00e9rents m\u00e9tiers.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

La relation entre technique et design est toujours compliqu\u00e9e\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Non. Par exemple nous sommes arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 reculer le pare-brise afin de conserver tout le dynamisme des dessins de Kevin. Certes, il y a toujours des limites techniques infranchissables li\u00e9es \u00e0 la structure de la plateforme mais on y est parvenu.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Votre m\u00e9tier de \u2018responsable design projet\u2019 de cette nouvelle Peugeot consiste en quoi\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0On anime la cr\u00e9ation lors du lancement du concours de style. On assiste \u00e0 toutes les s\u00e9ances de convergences avec les diff\u00e9rents m\u00e9tiers d\u2019engineering et du d\u00e9veloppement industriel. On joue le r\u00f4le d\u2019agent de liaison entre tous ces \u00e9quipes. Le but est bien \u00e9videmment d\u2019obtenir \u00e0 la fin une voiture coh\u00e9rente entre les designs \u2018exter\u2019 et \u2018inter\u2019.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

C\u2019est parfois un vrai combat ?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0On s\u2019appuie sur la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 de nos designers. Pour la P21, une fois qu\u2019on a trouv\u00e9 un truc super dans le scketch de Kevin, on prend notre b\u00e2ton de p\u00e8lerin et on va voir la technique pour obtenir ce qui nous semble le bon choix. Un exemple\u00a0: l\u2019inclinaison de la lunette arri\u00e8re plus dynamique, \u00e7a para\u00eet tout simple mais c\u2019est un vrai d\u00e9fi technologique, notamment pour toutes les reprises d\u2019efforts sur l\u2019anneau arri\u00e8re. Notre travail part en fait de l\u2019analyse du sketch \u00e0 partir duquel il faut f\u00e9d\u00e9rer tous les m\u00e9tiers derri\u00e8re pour le concr\u00e9tiser.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Je reviens au design avec Kevin. Pourquoi ne pas avoir int\u00e9gr\u00e9 les \u00ab\u00a0crocs\u00a0\u00bb des feux de jour dans la continuit\u00e9 des optiques\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0:\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0Les optiques full LED avec la signature lumineuse \u00e0 trois griffes rappelant celles des feux arri\u00e8re sont propos\u00e9es avec les niveaux 4 et 5 et donc les projecteurs ne sont pas identiques pour tous les niveaux.\u00a0Mais ces optiques \u00e0 griffes sont une reprise de la signature arri\u00e8re et font partie de l\u2019ADN de la marque. \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Peugeot communique beaucoup sur la version 100% \u00e9lectrique qui sera disponible en m\u00eame temps que les thermiques \u00e0 l\u2019automne. Pourquoi avoir conserv\u00e9 une calandre sur cette variante\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>K.G.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0On a toujours besoin d\u2019une entr\u00e9e d\u2019air, ne serait-ce que pour refroidir les batteries. Mais la calandre adopte la couleur caisse et les logos de cette e-208 sont dichro\u00efques. C\u2019est un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 qui change la couleur du Lion suivant l\u2019angle de vision.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Un mot Yann pour terminer ce tour de la voiture\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Kevin a trouv\u00e9 les bonnes proportions pour la P21. La voiture est mieux pos\u00e9e sur ses roues, plus longue. C\u2019est au d\u00e9part une superbe sculpture qui se suffit \u00e0 elle-m\u00eame. Pas besoin de rajouter des fioritures ou du chrome. Le bandeau des feux arri\u00e8re qui fait partie de l\u2019identifi\u00e9 de la marque est ici plus dynamique, on devine une voiture plus joueuse. C\u2019est un b\u00e9b\u00e9 lion, elle donne envie et on sait que l\u2019on va se faire plaisir avec\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

A vous \u00e9couter, transformer P21 en voiture de s\u00e9rie a \u00e9t\u00e9 un programme facile\u00a0!?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Si c\u2019est facile, c\u2019est qu\u2019on n\u2019a pas assez pouss\u00e9\u00a0! Si c\u2019est facile, c\u2019est qu\u2019on n\u2019a pas fait le job. Donc non, ce n\u2019est pas toujours facile. Si pousser toujours et toujours n\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment agr\u00e9able, c\u2019est n\u00e9cessaire pour obtenir un produit comp\u00e9titif\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Donc pas de regret au final\u00a0?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Nos vies sont jalonn\u00e9es de regrets\u00a0! Il faut l\u2019accepter et s\u2019en servir pour le coup d\u2019apr\u00e8s. La prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration sera donc diff\u00e9rente et encore meilleure\u00a0!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Did you have a 208 in the style office when you started the P21 program ?
\n<\/strong>K.G.: “No, as a general rule, we will rather look for the last thing that came out of the design office. We must always look beyond that. The way we reason with Gilles Vidal is to work on the longest possible term. Which way to go. For the 208, our goal was also to think about interior design with our colleagues. A kind of ping-pong between the “inter” and “exter” teams that results in an extremely coherent product.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

You still had in mind the 3008, 5008 and 508 who gave you a little bit of direction ?
\n<\/strong>K.G. : “Every car that comes to the end of its nose brings back the history of the brand.\u00a0Having the brand’s trust is great. Peugeot arrived on the market with a very successful 508 and the 208 has naturally become a “baby 508”, it even goes even further in terms of design. Series 2 is our lucky charm!\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

These new proportions are mainly due to the new platform ?
\n<\/strong>K.G. : “At the beginning of the project, we meet with the product teams. We knew that with the previous innovations (3008, 5008, 508) and the new platform, the 208 would be pulled upwards, in line with the move upmarket of the brand’s current products.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

In a few words, can you describe your baby’s style ?
\n<\/strong>K.G. : “With the remote windshield bay, the 208 is given a more sporty attitude without compromising habitability. In full view of the rear, the work done on the proportions is fine-tuned down to the last detail. The wings make the car well positioned on its wheels, this car goes much further than the current A9 (208) with its more drawn, sculpted hips.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>K.G. : “The curved engine hood is also very well worked, all in full and associated hollows. We have worked a lot on the stamping depths, which makes it possible to make a car with a lot of character.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Yann Beurel :<\/strong> “Our job is a bit like pushing for crime ! We must make the most of what we can get, such as this deep drawing for the wings. We had to leave our comfort zone and we worked a lot with the stamping teams to get there. We always ask stylists to go beyond their habits, to always push creativity and we try to convey this notion throughout the company, with the different professions.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

The relationship between technology and design is always complicated ?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.: “No. For example, we managed to move the windshield backwards in order to keep Kevin’s drawings as dynamic as possible. Of course, there are still impassable technical limitations related to the structure of the platform, but this has been achieved.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

What does your job as project design manager for this new Peugeot consist of ?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.: “We animate the creation at the launch of the style competition. We attend all the convergence sessions with the various engineering and industrial development professions. We act as a liaison between all these teams. The goal is obviously to obtain a car that is coherent between the “exterior” and “inter” designs.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Is it sometimes a real fight ?
\n<\/strong>Y.B.: “We rely on the creativity of our designers. For P21, once we find something great in Kevin’s scketch, we take our pilgrim’s stick and go see the technique to get what we think is the right choice. An example: the tilt of the rear window, which is more dynamic, seems very simple but it is a real technological challenge, especially for all the efforts made on the rear ring. Our work actually starts from the analysis of the sketch from which we must federate all the trades behind it to make it a reality.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m going back to design with Kevin. Why not integrate the “hooks” of the daytime running lights into the continuity of the optics ?
\n<\/strong>K.G. : “Full LED optics with the three-clawed light signature reminiscent of those of rear lamps are available with levels 4 and 5 and therefore the headlamps are not identical for all levels.\u00a0But these claw optics are a rework of the back signature and are part of the brand’s DNA. \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Peugeot is communicating a lot about the 100% electric version, which will be available at the same time as the thermal ones in the autumn. Why did you keep a grille on this variant ?
\n<\/strong>K.G.: “You always need an air inlet, if only to cool the batteries. But the grille adopts the body color and the logos of this e-208 are dichroic. It is a process that changes the color of the Lion according to the angle of vision.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Y.B.: “Kevin has found the right proportions for P21. The car is better placed on its wheels, longer. It is at the beginning a superb sculpture that is self-sufficient. No need to add frills or chrome. The taillight headband that is part of the brand’s identity is more dynamic here, you can guess a more playful car. She’s a baby lion, she makes you want to and you know you’re going to have fun with her !\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

Listening to you, turning P21 into a production car was an easy program !
\n<\/strong>Y.B.: “If it’s easy, it’s because we haven’t pushed hard enough ! If it’s easy, it’s because we didn’t do the job. So no, it’s not always easy. If pushing always and always is not necessarily pleasant, it is necessary to obtain a competitive product !\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n

So no regrets in the end ?
